Most guides to this trip list every route out of Hong Kong airport and leave you to choose. The better question is where in Shenzhen you are going. The city stretches a long way along the border, and each crossing puts you in a different part of it.
I live in Luohu and do this trip in both directions. Here is how I'd choose.
One Decision Before You Leave the Arrivals Area
If you want the ferry, you have to decide before you go through Hong Kong immigration. The SkyPier ferry to Shenzhen is only for passengers who have just flown in, and it works by keeping you airside: you never enter Hong Kong. Once you have cleared immigration, you can't go back to use it.
Everything else in this guide starts after you've cleared immigration and collected your bags.

Route 1: A43 Bus and East Rail, for Luohu or Futian
This is the one I use. It isn't glamorous, but it's cheap and it runs all day.
- From arrivals, walk to the Ground Transportation Centre and find the A43 bus (Long Win), signed towards Fanling.
- Get off at Sheung Shui MTR station. The fare is HK$32.4, and buses come every 12 to 30 minutes, leaving the airport from roughly 05:10 to 23:00. Later than that, use a coach to Huanggang (Route 2).
- Take the East Rail line one stop. This is where the route splits:
- Lo Wu (羅湖) for Luohu. The Lo Wu crossing is open 06:30 to midnight.
- Lok Ma Chau (落馬洲) for Futian. The Lok Ma Chau crossing is open 06:30 to 22:30.
- Walk across the border. On the Shenzhen side, Lo Wu brings you out at Luohu station (Line 1). Lok Ma Chau brings you out at Futian Checkpoint station (福田口岸), on Lines 4 and 10. That is not the same as Futian station, which is a different stop on Lines 2, 3 and 11.
How long it takes. When the roads are clear, I count on about an hour between Lo Wu and the airport. The bus company's timetable is more cautious than that, so if you have a flight to catch, plan for 90 minutes.
Paying. You don't need an Octopus card. The A43 takes a contactless Visa, Mastercard or UnionPay card tapped on the reader. The MTR takes the same three cards at its light-blue gates, at the normal adult fare. American Express and JCB are not accepted on the MTR. If you already have an Octopus, it works on both.
With luggage. The bus has a luggage rack, and the East Rail stretch is only one stop. You do have to carry your bags through two immigration halls on foot, which is true of every land crossing.
Route 2: Cross-Border Coach, Door to Checkpoint
If you'd rather not change between buses and trains with a suitcase, coaches run from the airport straight to the border.
- Where: the Mainland/Macao Transport and Travel Services Centre, Level 3 of Terminal 2. Tickets are sold at counters 01–16 and coaches leave from bays 20–26.
- To Shenzhen Bay Port (Nanshan): 06:00 to 22:30.
- To Lok Ma Chau (Huanggang) Port (Futian): 05:30 to 02:15, the latest service by far.
- Operators: CTG Bus, Eternal East, KCTIL Travel and S.T. Travel, each with its own counter. The airport doesn't publish fares, so compare at the counters.
The coach takes you to the checkpoint, you go through immigration on both sides on foot, and you carry on into Shenzhen from there. From Shenzhen Bay Port, Metro Line 13 runs into Nanshan.
A change to watch at Huanggang. A rebuilt Huanggang Port with single-stop clearance, where Hong Kong and mainland checks happen in one building, has been under preparation all summer. The Hong Kong zone took effect on 31 July 2026 and a trial run was held in August, but the opening date is still to be agreed by the two governments. I'll update this guide when it opens.
Route 3: SkyPier Ferry, Without Entering Hong Kong
This is the route most people don't know exists. I haven't taken it myself, so everything here comes from the airport's own instructions.
Who can use it: passengers who have just arrived by air, on the same day. It is not available if you are starting from Hong Kong.
How it works:
- After landing, don't go through immigration and don't collect your bags. Follow the signs to the ferry ticketing counter at Transfer Area E2.
- Buy your ticket and show your airline baggage tag receipt. Your checked bags are transferred to the ferry for you.
- Be at the counter at least 60 minutes before the sailing, or 30 minutes if you have no checked bags.
- A people mover takes you to SkyPier, and you board the ferry.
- You go through China immigration and customs when you land in Shenzhen, and nowhere else.
Two Shenzhen destinations:
- Shekou, in Nanshan: 30 to 40 minutes on the water.
- Fuyong, by Shenzhen's airport, with a free shuttle bus to the Shenzhen Bao'an terminal. From there, Metro Line 11 runs into Futian.
Things to know: you need your same-day boarding pass stub or e-ticket and a valid passport, plus a visa if yours requires one. Hand luggage on the ferry is limited to 9 × 14 × 22 inches. Sailing times and fares change, so check with the ferry operators before you rely on a particular boat.
Going the Other Way: Shenzhen to Hong Kong Airport for a Flight
When I fly out of Hong Kong I use Route 1 in reverse: across at Lo Wu, one stop to Sheung Shui, then the A43.
Leave more time than you think. From my home in Luohu, I allow about an hour to reach the Lo Wu crossing and another hour from Lo Wu to the airport. For the journey as a whole I leave at least two and a half hours, because traffic and border queues are hard to predict. That is before the time your airline wants you at the airport.
Early flights are the trap. Lo Wu and Lok Ma Chau don't open until 06:30. Only Huanggang is open all night, and the bus from there to the airport doesn't run through the small hours. The Hong Kong to Shenzhen guide covers that problem in detail.
The ferry works in this direction too. From Shekou or Fuyong you can take the ferry to SkyPier if you have a same-day flight on a participating airline. Some airlines let you check in and drop bags at the Shenzhen pier. You clear China immigration there, and you never pass through Hong Kong immigration at all.
What to Sort Out Before You Fly
- Mobile data. You'll want it on the Shenzhen side the moment you cross. Pick a travel eSIM plan that covers both Hong Kong and mainland China.
- A way to pay in Shenzhen. Set up Alipay or WeChat Pay with your foreign card before you leave home. On the metro, a contactless card also works at gates with the card reader.
- Entry to mainland China. Many passports now qualify for visa-free entry. Check the 240-hour visa-free transit rules if you're not sure.
